Does God Forgive Divorce? A Guide for Christian Women
It’s a question that other Christian women ask me often — does God forgive divorce? This is a complicated question, as there are many different interpretations of the Bible on the matter. And no matter how faithful you are, it can be confusing to make sense of the teachings of the Bible within the context of modern life.
Christianity and Divorce
Christians have always been divided on the topic of divorce. The truth is, there is no one answer to this question. Each person’s relationship with God is unique, and the ultimate question we’re left to grapple with is this—can you forgive yourself?
What the Bible Says About Divorce
In the gospel of Matthew, Jesus said, “Whoever divorces his wife, except on the grounds of sexual immorality, makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.” (Matthew 5:31-32) The book of Mark tells us that a man and his wife are joined by God to “become one flesh” and that “what God has joined together…no one [must] separate.” (Mark 10:6-9)” So it seems Jesus was very clear about the fact that didn’t condone divorce.
However, it’s clear that staying in an unhealthy marriage is not compatible with the Christian goal of raising a family in a loving and peaceful household. What’s more, it’s difficult to reconcile the wording of the scriptures with modern standards of marriage.
Remember, the Old Testament was written during a time when men were permitted to have multiple wives —and the punishment for adultery was the death penalty! Sokeep in mind the importance of interpreting the word of God through a modern lens.
Of course, if you’re considering divorce, you should seek counsel from your pastor or a trusted Christian friend. Divorce is not something to be taken lightly, but if you’re in a relationship that isn’t best for you and your children, then you need to do what’s right for you and your family.
Does God Forgive Divorce? Asking God’s Forgiveness
If you believe divorce is a sin, choosing to end your marriage can be scary. And it’s normal if the questions “does God forgive divorce” has crossed your mind.
Here’s the thing, mama. God is willing to forgive any sin, no matter how big or small. And when you look back at what went wrong in your marriage, you will probably think of some moments when you sinned. But that’s okay – you are human, after all.
The important thing is that you ask for His forgiveness and then take steps to learn from your mistakes. Not only will you find relief in asking for God’s forgiveness, but He will also give you the strength and wisdom you need to make good decisions for your future.
Trust in Him, and He will lead you to peace and happiness.
How to Forgive Yourself for Divorce
Even after asking God’s forgiveness, you may still find it difficult to forgive yourself. After all, the fallout from a divorce is one of the most painful experiences a woman can endure, and it takes a lot more than prayer to recover.
But being a Christian is all about forgiveness – and that includes forgiving yourself. Here are a few tips for forgiving yourself after a divorce.
Focus on Your Family
At its core, marriage is about nurturing the love of God within your family. So if the love between you and your husband is no longer there, how can you continue to create a loving home for your family? So remember that you’re doing what’s best for the future of your children, yourself, and even your ex.
Remember That God is in Control
Remind yourself that God is still in control. Even though your marriage has ended, God has not forgotten about you. He is still interested in your well-being and wants you to find healing and wholeness. And He will lead you to the best version of yourself as long as you trust in Him.
Lean on the Support of the Church
If you are struggling with your divorce, don’t be afraid to reach out to your church for support. There are likely other women who have been through the same thing and can offer words of wisdom and comfort.
Your pastor can also help you through your divorce and offer advice on how to deepen your faith in this difficult time. Remember that leaning into your faith during challenging times will help you become a better Christian.
Rely on the Power of Prayer
If you find it difficult to forgive yourself, remember to rely on the power of prayer. Prayer can help you to release your feelings of guilt and shame and to find peace with the decision you have made. In addition, prayer can help you focus on the future and trust that God will help you to build a new life for yourself.
Remember Your Purpose
Finally, remember that your divorce does not define you. You are still a child of God, worthy of love and respect. So don’t let your divorce define your worth or your future. Instead, allow God to work through you in this challenging time in your life. You will surely emerge stronger and more resilient than ever before.
Working through the question “does God forgive divorce” is an inner journey that takes time. As Christians, the best thing we can do when we’re bearing the weight of our past decisions is to release ourselves from guilt and shame and find forgiveness. In prayer, you can find the forgiveness of God. Then, you can also find the inner peace needed to forgive yourself.
